This is a question that is widely asked what to eat to lose weight and the answer sought after. If only it was that easy, it would be wonderful and we could fit into that pair of “I will keep them for when I lose weight jeans”. On a more serious note, there are so many different factors that need to be taken into account when thinking about what to eat to lose weight.
What other factors matter?
Many other factors need to be taken into account when planning on what to eat to lose weight. If you are a vegetarian you aren’t exactly going to eat animal protein such as chicken, are you? What if you have a nut allergy you can’t just go ahead and pick up a handful of peanuts. Therefore when asking yourself the question what to eat to lose the weight you must also think about any dietary requirements, allergies, tolerances to foods, how that food makes you feel, you don’t want to be eating rice and pasta if you feel bloated straight after eating it.
What types of food are off limits?
Believe it or not that old saying “everything in moderation” is actually true. If you ate everything in moderation then no one would really be overweight. If I were to treat myself once a week with a bar of chocolate and a packet of crisps and ate healthily for the rest of the week then I wouldn’t have over indulged and would probably more than likely still have lost my 1lb of fat that week from having my 3500 calorie deficit. The only thing that is off limits when watching what you eat is eating sugary fatty processed foods every day.
What kind of foods should I eat more of?
When watching what you are eating try and eat foods that have less saturated fat, sugar, and salt in them. Saturated fat raises cholesterol and increases the risk of heart disease. Try and eat food with good fats in them such as Omega 3 fatty acid which can be found in oily fish, polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats too. Cutting out a whole number of foods from your diet may be dangerous, this may lead to you not getting some essential nutrients in order for your body to function properly, leading to undernourishment. Foods packed with nutrients are better for you. So this is some of the foods I would suggest of what to eat to lose weight as they will not only help your body look and feel better, they will also help you feel fuller for longer.
Are pasta and rice bad for me?
The short answer to this would be no. However, if you were to eat these every day then you would soon see yourself becoming gradually bulkier. Pasta and rice are full of carbohydrates, whilst carbohydrates aren’t off limits as everyone needs some form of carbs in order to have energy, I would limit them. Alternatively, you can eat unrefined wholegrain rice and pasta. This way it will be packed full of nutrients and fiber. Unrefined wholegrain carbs are better for you as they get released into your body slower, therefore, your blood sugar level (glucose) will not rapidly spike. Whereas refined products have undergone a process which in effect make them have fewer nutrients and will spike your glucose levels abruptly.
So what’s the conclusion? Basically, you can eat what you want and still lose weight, the catch is that everything must be in moderation. Even fruit is limited to 5 a day due to its intrinsic sugars. So let’s not ask the question what to eat to lose weight, let us just eat what we want as long as we are sensible.
