How To Lose Weight With Hypothyroid

What is Hypothyroidism?

You may not have heard the term Hypothyroidism, you will most probably know Hypothyroidism as an underactive Thyroid. Here we will explain how to lose weight with Hypothyroid.

What causes this?

Hypothyroidism otherwise known as an underactive Thyroid is caused from your Thyroid Gland located in your neck not working properly or to its full capacity. Meaning that it has become damaged in parts or all together.

What are the symptoms of Hypothyroid?

Just like any illness or disease, not everyone will experience the same symptoms or will they have them all.

Some of the most common symptoms of Hypothyroid include;

  • Weight Gain
  • Extreme tiredness/ chronic fatigue
  • Dry skin
  • Loss of hair
  • Change in hair texture
  • Change in hair appearance (dull/tired)
  • Skin changes (dry)
  • Feeling the cold more than others
  • Depression
  • Menstrual Cycles irregular/abnormal
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Difficulty remembering things
  • Cramping muscles

Weight Gain/Difficulty Losing Weight

Weight gain in Hypothyroid is probably the most noticeable symptom if you suffer from an Underactive Thyroid. The reason you gain weight or you have difficulty losing weight with Hypothyroidism is due to the fact that The Thyroid Gland is responsible for your metabolism. Your metabolism is responsible for energy in versus energy out. Thus meaning how fast your body burns your food for energy.

What Factors Determine Metabolic Rate?

There are several factors that determine a person’s Basal Metabolic Rate. Some factors include;

  • Underactive Thyroid
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Hereditary
  • Your weight

The two main factors above including Underactive Thyroid and Weight. The Underactive Thyroid is responsible for weight gain if you suffer from Hypothyroidism. This is due to the mere fact that people who suffer with such an illness have significantly less of the Thyroid Hormone. The Thyroid hormone as mentioned above is the key factor in your metabolism. The slower your metabolism is, the more difficult it will be to lose weight. However, the bigger you are weight wise the higher your metabolism will be. This is due to the fact that it takes your body more energy to move, thus burning more calories. Having an underactive Thyroid and being significantly overweight is a vicious circle.

How To Lose Weight With Hypothyroid?

So we know why we put on weight with Hypothyroidism, so the question now is how to lose weight with Hypothyroid?

First things first. You need to completely distress yourself. Th0e more stress in your life the more pounds you will pile on.

You think that being stressed is nothing to do with your weight gain? Especially if you suffer Hypothyroidism. Well, you are so wrong. Being stressed not only leads you to comfort eating, which usually consists of binge eating lots of sugary chocolate and cakes. It also releases an unnecessary amount of Cortisol into your stressed body.

What is Cortisol and why does it matter in Weight Loss?

Cortisol is flooded into your body when you are stressed, this, in turn, means your body Is being overflowed with glucose, this glucose just floats around your body due to your insulin levels also increasing as it comes hand in hand with elevated Cortisol levels. Due to your glucose levels also increasing you will develop insulin resistance. Insulin Resistance means that there is far too much glucose in your body, your body will then turn this into fat and store it rather than using it as energy.

In order to lose weight with Hypothyroid you need to cut back on all sugars, I’m not saying that it must not ever cross your lips again. A lot of condiments and sauces, as well as pre-packed foods, contain sugar. Sugar is what most of us crave, there is no harm in treating yourself to a couple of cookies every so often.

In order to lose weight with Hypothyroid, a diet to follow would be that of The Paleo Diet or something similar with the same guidelines and food groups.

What is The Paleo Diet?

The Paleo Diet is one that goes way-way back to the stone age days. The days where people lived in caves and never dreamed of anything close to what we have today. Back in they days, people had to hunt for their food in order to eat, they couldn’t go to the local shop and purchase anything, they had to kill to eat, if there was nothing to kill or nothing growing, there was nothing to eat, it’s as simple as that.

How to be successful with The Paleo Diet

So what can you eat on The Paleo Diet?

  • Proteins

Such as Grass Fed animals, fish and eggs

  • Plant-based foods
  • Vegetables (not potatoes)
  • Fruits
  • Nuts and seeds

What to Avoid?

  • All refined sugars
  • Carbohydrates
  • Legumes
  • Dairy

So the main principle of The Paleo Diet is to eat proteins and avoid Carbs.

Let’s take a look at a typical day on the Paleo Diet.

  • Scrambled Eggs, no milk just egg
  • Half Grilled Tomato
  • Tea without milk or with Soya milk (a milk alternative)

  • Half a has Avacado

  • Grilled chicken caesar salad (low or no carb caesar sauce)

  • Celery and Carrot sticks with Hummus Dip

  • Grilled Salmon with sweet potato and asparagus

  • Handful of Almonds and Cashews

It’s simple really. Losing weight with Hypothyroid, you just need to remember to cut out the sugars and carbs from your diet, stick to proteins, such as chicken, turkey, fish, eggs and nuts. Cut out all refined sugar and carbohydrates. Especially sugars, bread, rice, potatoes, and pasta.

As well as The Paleo Diet for how to lose weight with Hypothyroid, I would also suggest Diets such as The Atkins Diet as it is very similar to The Paleo Diet.

The Mediterranean is also a highly recommended diet for Hypothyroidism.
